EMail practices

After hearing Grover talk about gmail and how he is using this for all his email, I have decided to try this out for myself. I am a Macintosh user by preference and enjoy using Leopard's email client. I am in the process of testing:
  • forwarding all my JMU email to my Google mail account. (I have consistently run out of space with my JMU account and hopefully this will allow me to keep email as long as I want to)
  • I still wish to use the Leopard (Apple) email client so I am testing my configurations so that I can send mail either from my JMU address or from my Gmail account using this email client.
  • I am unclear about where copies of my sent-mail messages go when I use my JMU account - I suspect these still remain on the JMU server (can anyone clarify this?). If this is the case I will most likely will have to move these over manually to my gmail account.
Well I will see how my email adventures go this week and then decide if this practice is worth continuing for me.

I'm unclear about where the sent messages go as well, but I'm with you on switching my JMU email over. All the space will be a nice change. Grover is quite convincing, isn't he? :)

Gmail's archive feature is the selling point for me. Rich, how has the "big change" gone thus far?

Actually Laura I believe the "big change" is going well. I have now effectively moved all my email messages to Gmail and my Apple email client seems to be doing a good job managing this as well. I very rarely have used the web browser to access my gmail account. So far so good.

I'm getting ready to join the migration to gmail as well. My jmu email is (yet again) dangerously close to quota. At this point, switching systems seems easier than searching for old e-mails to delete.

When I asked my students about gmail, one insisted that it ws the "least secure" e-mail system. She insisted that subscribers to gmail get advertisements related to their e-mail content. I wonder if their is any truth to that.

I agree with you about the lack of space on webmail. However, gmail issues are not supported by JMU so how is the help or assistance with gmail with problems occur? I am considering forwarding to gmail.

Sarah, did you make the changes in Gmail and in Webmail?
